Aims and Objectives

- To understand our cognition of a traditional interface
- To gather an understanding of a users emotional response to working in a 3Denvironment
- To discover for future practise the main requirements people ask for in anexemplary interface
- To create a list of advantages of adding the 3rd dimension (i.e. the z axis) to the design of a GUI
- Investigate commercial examples of 3D Graphical User Interfaces
- To create a list of disadvantages of adding the 3rd dimension (i.e. the z axis) to the design of a GUI
- Discuss why 3D should be implemented opposed to 2D in the design of an interfacewith regards to certain tasks
- Discuss why 3D will only (presently) succeed if it is implemented along side 2Delements in an interface.
- Create an interface using 3Ds Max to demonstrate the results of this research
- Produce primary research materials e.g. discussions and questionnaires, case studies- Analyse the results and from that compile a list of new questions

Apple Store New York

Back in January, a group of 8 from the clas went to new york and me being a complete apple mac nerd had to go to the apple store in soho. Here i was glancing through the holy grale of games sections and stumbled across The Sims 2. I remember that one of the research papers i picked for my lit review incuded an online 3D chat environment based on the same style as this game and said it had to be bought. It had nothing to do with the amazingly white apple bag you get with every purchase!

2D

Everything that is projected onto the human retina is projected as a flat 2D image, no matter the source of the projection. Therefore, everything we see can be described as being 2D.

Around the topic of creating 3D environments, it is speculated that the standard computer screen isnt a suitable medium to display 3D environments. Personally from learning that everything we see is 2D, Why not?

3D environment for blind people

Wow, i just had a mad idea. totally a side track but somethin gto be pursues in the future. The idea of using brail input devices and an environment which uses sound in a 3D space for organising and utilitse files. Im not too sure what a final product could be but it sounds pretty cool!

-> blind people guided by sound(surround sound) within the environment
-> 3D sounds
-> different sounds at different levels for different areas of the environment
-> being led by the ear opposed to the eye
-> its known that many blind people develope their sense of hearing to such an ability that they can "visualise" and guide themselves around real life environments. Kinda like bats.

Asset list for creating the environment

If the environment is to be a true representation, it should be to scale. Therefore archetectural drawings should be obtained.

This is an plan view of Alexandra College

Create buildings in 3Ds Max
Create simple textures in photoshop

Use the "london Underground" style to create a network map between computers. This will be displayed in 3D opposed to a 2D plan view.

Create intro interface in photoshop and place in director.
